Kagoshima Prefecture is located at the southern tip of Kyushu and boasts the largest area in western Japan. In addition, it is one of the most prosperous prefectures in Japan, and is a major production area for sweet potatoes, Kagoshima tea, etc. Agricultural production ranks first in Kyushu and boasts the third largest in Japan, but the livestock and fisheries industries are also very active, making it a treasure trove of food that can form a food culture in a single prefecture. Shochu production is traditionally popular and very famous.
In the old days, Kagoshima Prefecture is a traditional prefecture that has been called as “Satsuma”, such as "Satsuma - age (Fish Cake)" and "Satsuma - imo (Sweet Potato)", which still retains Satsuma's name until today.
Shochu is kind of spirits and one of the traditional alcohol drink in Japan. Kagoshima is well known as production area of Imo Shochu (made from sweet potato). Imo Shochu has rich aroma brought by the ingredients and there are several ways to enjoy Shochu as ROCK, with water or soda. In winter in Japan, we recommend to add hot water into Shochu.
The Shochu, “DAIYAME” (please refer the picture) is highly recommend to drink with soda!!
Satsuma-imo has brought into Kagoshima in 1600’s. The climate of Kagoshima is really optimal for sweet potato and the amount of cultivation is also No.1 in Japan. The share is 37.5% and it is about two times larger than Ibaraki prefecture where the second famous production area.
